UNIQUE SOUTH RICHMOND ROTARY CULTURE
The things that are most dear to the hearts of our members are faith, family, and the United States of America. We live and work within the principles of ROTARY and we do it together. We take our charitable work in our Community, the District and the World seriously. We believe in having fun, usually at each other’s expense. We are considered, by some, as rowdy or disrespectful. We are not always politically correct. The one thing we all share is the common goal of giving back to the community and mankind.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS:
In December we elect new officers who will take office on July 1 of the following year. In this Club, most officers serve “through the chairs” which provides the best training and experience as you approach the office of President. At the election, at least one member of the Club stands and chastises the Nominating Committee for presenting such a poor slate of officers, just how worthless they are, how the Club will suffer if they are elected….and promptly seconds the nomination.
The President Elect establishes the goals and priorities for the Club and begins the planning for his/her year within that six month period prior to installation The President presides over all weekly luncheon meetings as well as the monthly Board meeting. The real decision making takes place at Board meetings and all members are invited to attend and join in the very vocal discussions and boisterous conduct.
NEW MEMBER PROPOSAL AND INDUCTION:
When an existing member has someone they would like to introduce to Rotary, they invite them to attend a few luncheon meetings. If the individual desires to join the club the inviting member fills out the necessary paperwork and presents the information to the President for Board approval. There is an interview process to make certain that the individual is aware of the financial responsibilities as well as the expectations that the club would have for community service.
Once approved, the Executive Secretary sends the proposed a letter of invitation to join the Club which includes the initiation fee and prorate dues for the balance of the Rotary year. Induction is scheduled as quickly as possible upon receipt of the proposed member information sheet and check. Shortly after becoming a member of the Club, the new member is expected to give a five minute Classification talk and perform a few other tasks in order to have the orange dot removed from his/her name badge.
CONDUCT OF THE MEETINGS:
We are considered a singing Rotary Club and begin our meetings with song. The pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States is followed by a prayer. After Happy Dollars and Fines, visitors and guests are welcomed and the speaker is introduced. We expect our members to give the speaker full respect and attention! However, if the speaker happens to be a fellow Rotarian, all bets are off. We discourage the throwing of napkins at the member speakers, especially when they contain silverware.
REMEMBER…THIS ROTARY CLUB IS NOT LIKE A VAST MAJORITY OF ROTARY CLUBS. WE WORK HARD TO ACCOMPLISH GOOD THINGS…BUT…WE ARE NOT THE STAID, QUIET KIND OF ROTARIANS USUALLY FOUND. WE ENJOY LIFE AND EACH OTHER. WE DO NOT TAKE OURSELVES SERIOUSLY AND ACCOMPLISH A LOT OF REALLY GOOD WORK.
WE THRIVE ON CONTROVERSY BUT DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS. WE URGE YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE THINGS AND ENJOY THE “FUN” !
